Carnival Corp has bolstered its effort to improve its environmental track record, having devoted another new role and small team to that goal.

The US cruise major has appointed Sandra Rowlett, a former US federal safety investigator, as vice president of an incident analysis group focused on health, environment, safety and security (HESS).

She will also work to implement new global investigation procedures, investigator training and certification and root-cause analysis aimed at improving compliance, the company said in a news release.

Carnival declined to comment further on the new position and team.

Rowlett will report to the company's new chief ethics and compliance officer Peter Anderson from the company's Miami headquarters.

"Expanding this team is another example of our company's even stronger commitment to improve environmental compliance and excellence across the global fleet," Anderson said in a statement.

Independent from Carnival, the eight-member group will investigate HESS-related events and recommending better compliance policies, procedures and training.

It will also recommend corrective and preventative measures and develop investigation training programmes for brand investigators.

Carnival in August named Anderson as the new chief ethics and compliance officer as part of a multimillion-dollar fine tied to violating a five-year probation.

The group investigators under Rowlett will be based in Miami; Orlando; Hamburg, Germany; Southampton, U.K.; Sydney, Australia; Santa Clarita, California; and Genoa, Italy.

"With over 100 ships sailing to more than 700 ports around the world, it's imperative that we are thorough and diligent when it comes to the health, safety and security of our guests and crew, and protecting the environments and destinations where we operate, which are top priorities for all of us," Anderson said in a statement.

"Sandy brings valuable experience and insights to Carnival Corporation from decades of investigative and safety-focused work, and has assembled a world-class team of investigators who are positioned around the globe."

Rowlett worked nearly three decades at the National Transportation Safety Board in various posts, including overseeing aviation accident investigations, and railroad, pipeline and hazardous materials investigations.

She also served as an air traffic controller at Los Angeles International Airport and in the United States Air Force.

She holds a master of aeronautical science in aviation and aerospace safety systems degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
