Royal Caribbean Cruises is further building out its Icon class of LNG-powered ships.

The New York-listed owner announced today that it has entered into an agreement with shipbuilder Meyer Turku to order a third Icon-class vessel for delivery in 2025.

The 200,000-gt ship will join its two Project Icon sister ships, to be delivered in 2022 and 2024, in Royal Caribbean International's fleet of 25 vessels.

"We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to our Icon-class fleet that affirms our commitment to clean-power technologies at sea," Royal Caribbean Cruises chief executive Richard Fain said.

"We've designed a class of ships powered by liquefied natural gas that leverages the latest, environmentally-friendly applications.

"We believe that innovative shipbuilding can reduce our carbon footprint and boost energy efficiencies to help to build a cleaner future."

Royal Caribbean said the latest Icon-class ship order is contingent upon financing.

The company announced in October 2017 that it had obtained $5.9bn in financing for the other two ships.

Royal Caribbean owns 61 ships through brands Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises and Silversea Cruises

The owner, which has major stakes in TUI Cruises and Pullmantur Cruceros, has another 15 on order as of 31 March.

Royal Caribbean's shares have ticked up 0.5% to $118.61 through late afternoon today.
