The Baltic Exchange has recruited Clarksons Platou’s communications director to lead its commercial operations.

Janet Sykes will become the London-based exchange's chief commercial officer on 3 July as part of its ambitious growth plans.

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) took over the Baltic last year and Mark Jackson was appointed as chief executive.

In an exclusive interview with TradeWinds last month, Jackson said the Baltic will be able to “grow as an organisation” under SGX ownership.

Newly appointed Sykes has worked at Clarksons Platou since 2010 but she is no stranger to the Baltic.

She served as head of marketing in the Baltic's St Mary Axe headquarters from 2001 to 2010.

Jackson said in a statement: “We're delighted that Janet Sykes will be joining the team. She has global shipping experience with a strong focus on the derivative markets and data products.

“We have bold plans to provide more freight market benchmarks, increase our regulatory role and support our members in post-trading activities by creating a digital maritime market infrastructure.

“Strengthening our team is integral to realising this vision.”
