A former Greek shipowner has been convicted of smuggling more than 2 tons of heroin into the country.

Makis Yiannousakis and ship agent Giorgos Bourdouvalis were found guilty, together with seven other defendants, in a case dating back to 2014.

But they were cleared of running a criminal organisation.

The Kathimerini daily said sentences are due in the next few days. Their lawyers have asked for a series of extenuating circumstances to be considered.

In the summer of 2014, authorities seized 500kg of drugs at Yiannousakis’s residence in Filothei, northern Athens.

Bourdouvalis was responsible for the lease of a cargoship named as Noor 1, a court heard.

Three Greeks, three Turks and an Iranian were also found guilty, while most of the crew members were acquitted.

The owner’s ex-wife, her mother and a maid were also cleared.
