Firefighters have extinguished a fire on an MSC boxship off Sri Lanka.

The blaze broke out on the 13,800-teu MSC Daniela (built 2008) on Tuesday night 11 miles west of Colombo, local media said.

The Indian navy said it had sent two ships, INS Gharial and INS Darshak, to help with containing the bright orange flames.

An Indian coast guard ship also assisted.

There were no reports of injuries among the 22 crew.

MSC said the ship was sailing from Singapore to Port Said when the fire started towards the bow.

"The crew immediately initiated emergency procedures and attempted to control the fire," it added.

MSC worked with local and national authorities in a concerted effort to extinguish the flames using tugs, a specialised firefighting vessel and a helicopter.

The fire was put out at 0630 local time on Wednesday.

"MSC is currently in discussion with the local authorities to berth the vessel at the appropriate time. Once the ship is considered safe, an investigation into the cause of the fire will be formally initiated," MSC said.

A thorough inspection will have to be undertaken before the extent of damage and cargo loss is known.
