Discussing yesterday's Brexit vote, shipping executives from Greece displayed split views following the historic vote.

A shipping executive from a diversified Athens-based owner, said: "If I was a manager in a London-based shipping company, I would be a bit worried.

"I would definitely prefer the current regime to stay intact."

As TradeWinds reported earlier today, Barry Rogliano Salles president Tim Jones and former president of the European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA) Thomas Rehder, referred to the Greeks as the first candidates to review their UK operations.

Following the European Commission targeting the Greek shipping tax regime over the past few months and changes in UK taxation as well, Brexit only adds to the uncertainty felt by Greek companies.

But one prominent London-based Greek shipowner was not shaken by today's developments.

He told TradeWinds: "Shipping works on a worldwide basis.

"We are not making a living from European charterers or shipbuilders.

"Nothing will change and even the decline of the sterling could have a positive impact in the short term."

The result of the UK referendum caught a lot of people by surprise and raised a few Greek eyebrows as well.

One said that "Brexit" was not among the hot topics during Posidonia because everyone thought that Britain would vote to remain in the EU.

A Greek shipping executive who preferred not to be named said: "We thought the 'stay' vote would finally prevail but we were proven wrong.

"Nobody knows what exactly this means for shipping, but it is definitely not a fact that the industry can just ignore."

The Athens-based executive added that his company's only exposure in England is limited to a few shipbroking offices, with which they cooperate.
