Golar LNG and partner Schlumberger are believed to be targeting the Kosmos Energy as their next customer in their floating LNG (FLNG) production business, a US analyst said.

Wells Fargo Securities analyst Michael Webber flagged up the potential prospect for Golar's FLNG ambitions after Kosmos announced a new significant gas discovery off Mauritania and Senegal today.

The discovery bolsters Kosmo's plans to develop its offshore finds with two FLNG export units in a project that could be expanded by two more units.

Webber said that based on his discussions with Kosmos, he believes Golar and Schlumberger are vying to score the project, although there are other suitors as well.

"We believe Kosmos is likely the next focal point for Golar within [the] FLNG business," Webber said.

Denver-based Kosmos said today that its Teranga-1 well encountered 31 metres of net gas pay, confirming a 200-kilometre gas fairway to its Marsouin-1 well.

The company how says it has discovered 25 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gross energy resource in a fairway that could hold 50 tcf.

"Our continuing exploration success demonstrates we have opened a super-major scale basin offshore Mauritania and Senegal with world-class resource potential," said Kosmos chief executive Andrew Inglis today.

Word of a new prospect comes less than two weeks after a setback for Golar LNG's FLNG hopes. Gary Smith-led Golar announced  on 29 April that it pulled out of Ophir Energy's Fortuna FLNG project.
