Hartmann Gas Carriers of Germany is moving into the handysize LPG carrier segment by purchasing a newbuilding from Nantong Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China.

The 22,000-cbm ship was originally ordered by Norway's Odfjell, but the contract was cancelled after heavy delays.

The German shipowner is believed to be paying $45m for the vessel.

Hartmann declined to comment on the deal, though Odfjell confirmed that it has cancelled its contract for the LPG carrier.

The ship is due for delivery in December.

In October last year, Hartmann agreed to take over the 36,000-cbm midsize gas carrier GasChem Beluga (built 2016) while it was under construction a the yard. The ship is on long-term charter from Oslo-listed Ocean Yield.

Ocean Yield has a sistership, the GasChem Orca (built 2017), that is also on charter to Hartmann.

Hartmann Gas, which is part of Hartmann Reederei, is listed with six midsize gas carriers but is particularly focused in 10,500-cbm vessels, where it is has 25 ethylene carriers and semi refrigerated LPG carriers.
