Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) said it has secured a mixture of five gas and crude tanker newbuildings in recent weeks, worth around $600m.

An unnamed Greek shipowner has ordered a 174,000-cbm LNG carrier newbuilding, the world’s largest shipbuilder said.

HHI said the order comes just days after NYK ordered a similar sized LNG carrier from HHI yard Samho on the back of a 20 year charter.

It has also won a LPG carrier order from an unnamed South Korean shipowner. It has also booked two crude oil carriers from Greek shipping companies.

TradeWinds reported last week that Kyklades Maritime had ordered two scrubber-fitted suezmax tankers at the yard for between $64m and $65m each.

HHI said the LNG carrier orders it has received this year will be equipped with Hi-ALS, an air lubrication system developed in-house by the shipbuilder.

The device is claimed cut energy usage by 8% by improving a vessel’s operating efficiency by reducing the frictional resistance by spraying air on the lower part of the hull.

“Due to the recent tightening of environmental regulations, orders for LNG carriers are continuing to recover,” said an HHI official.

“We expect to receive additional orders for large-scale LNG carriers this year.”
