Petredec says it has entered a deal to build the largest LPG import facility in South Africa as the country ramps up gas imports.

The Singapore-based shipowner and logistics firm says the deal with local player Bidvest Tank Terminals will be for the region's largest pressurised LPG import terminal. The facility, located on Richards Bay, will be capable of storing 22,600 tonnes of LPG.

Along with imports, the facility will also have re-export capability for supplying neighbouring countries. The facility is expected to be complete toward the end of 2019.

Petredec chief executive Giles Fearn said: “Delivering LPG to South Africa on a previously unprecedented scale brings with it financial savings to our customers that will ultimately benefit consumers with lower gas prices.”

The Petredec-Bidvest facility will join the recently opened 5,500-tonne Sunrise Energy LPG terminal also in Richards Bay.

Petredec already has storage on the African continent with 15,000 tonnes of storage in Mauritius.
