Royal Vopak has expanded its LNG footprint with the acquisition of a major stake in Colombia’s only LNG import facility.

The Dutch storage specialist has agreed to acquire a 49% in Cartagena-based Sociedad Portuaria el Cayao (SPEC). Financial terms were not disclosed.

The LNG import facility, which has been in operation since 2016, consists of an LNG jetty, onshore infrastructure and a 9.2 km gas pipeline which connects SPEC to the national gas grid.

“We are very much looking forward to this partnership with Promigas and to enter into the growing Colombian LNG market,” said Vopak chief executive Eelco Hoekstra.

“This is another growth step in our LNG portfolio and it fits very well in our ambitions to grow and diversify our service offering in LNG.”

The remaining 51% stake in SPEC will be held by South American natural gas specialist Promigas.
