Commodities trader Gunvor has sued Torm and Valero, accusing the duo of bringing it damaged cargo, costing it at least $1.65m.

The lawsuit, filed last Friday in Houston federal court, says Gunvor bought 300,000 barrels of naphtha from the Texas oil company and enlisted the 49,757-dwt Torm Thunder (built 2015) to deliver it last autumn.

The cargo was loaded onto the tanker over three days in mid-September, save a 12-hour break on 14 September for line verification.

When the cargo arrived at its undisclosed location, the naphtha was found to be off-spec.

The complaint alleges Valero delivered bad fuel and Torm kept an unseaworthy ship not adequately prepared for the naphtha.

Gunvor says it suffered a minimum of $1.65m in damages and is seeking attorneys fees.

Neither Valero nor Torm immediately returned requests for comment.
