Two Ukrainain MSC containership officers have been arrested in Italy on suspicion of killing their captain.

First officer Dmytro Savinykh, 44, and third officer Oleksandr Maltsevdi, 43, were held in Genoa on Tuesday at the request of deputy prosecutor Marcello Maresca, Italian media reported.

They are suspected of killing 51-year-old compatriot Yurii Kharytonov, who was reported to have disappeared from the 2,054-MSC Giannina (built 1997) overnight on 19 October off the coast of Italy.

They were due to be further questioned on Wednesday.

A "stain" found on the bridge prompted further investigation of the disappearance, reports said.

The vessel remains moored near Genoa.

MSC told TradeWinds: "MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company last month informed police and other authorities that a person was reported missing from the container ship MSC Giannina and the company continues to cooperate with the police in their inquiries.”
