Energy major Shell is to provide LNG bunkers to Teekay's shuttle tanker fleet in Europe.

The deal was signed by Steve Hill, executive vice president of Shell Energy, and Idar Hillersoy, president of Teekay Offshore Logistics.

“We are excited to add another tanker customer to the growing number of organisations adopting LNG – the most affordable alternative to traditional marine fuels available today,” said Tahir Faruqui, general manager of Shell Global Downstream LNG.

“We have now safely completed more than 100 ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations to meet the growing customer demand for cleaner-burning fuel”.

Hillersoy added: “With our latest generation of shuttle tankers commencing operations, we are very pleased to have signed our first ever LNG supply contract.

"Having secured Shell as a strategic partner provides us with a reliable and safe long-term LNG fuelling solution. The sophisticated LNG powered E-Shuttle Tanker reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 50%, making them the most environmentally friendly shuttle tankers ever built.”

The four 130,000-dwt E-Shuttle tankers are being constructed at Samsung in South Korea.

The first is due this month, with the others following in 2020.

They will operate on both LNG as the primary fuel, and a mixture of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as secondary fuel.

The units also have battery packs for flexible power distribution and blackout prevention.
