US-listed Teekay Tankers is selling one of its oldest suezmax tankers in what appears to be part of a fleet renewal.

Brokers in the US and in Europe said the Hyundai Heavy Industries-built 165,000-dwt Ashkini Spirit (built 2003) has been sold to an undisclosed Greek buyer for $19.4m, possibly as much as $19.8m.

VesselsValue estimates the tanker is worth $18.7m.

The firm price may partly be a result of a favourable docking position. Ashkini Spirit is not due for special survey until March 2023.

Soaring values

The values of secondhand tankers have soared this year.

In April, the Sasebo Heavy Industires-built 150,000-dwt DS Symphony and DS Melody (both built 2001) were sold for $11.75m each.

Teekay did not respond to requests for comment on the sale of the Ashkini Spirit.

The company has two other suezmaxes of the same vintage. The Hyundai-built 165,000-dwt Iskmati Spirit and the 159,000-dwt Narmada Spirit (both built 2003) and are also likely sales candidates.

Teekay bought the Ashkini Spirit as Aegean Lady in July 2004 and traded it profitably until the market crashed in 2008.

The company is listed with 23 suezmaxes with an average age of 11 years.

This article has been amended since publication to reflect that the Narmada Spirit is a likely sales candidate.
