German shipbuilder Pella Sietas has landed its biggest contract in the shape of a €100m ($111m) Russian icebreaker.

The yard said Icebreaker7 will be 120 metres long and is part of the Russian fleet modernisation programme.

It will have fire-fighting, sea rescue and deck cargo transport capacity.

The newbuilding was ordered by Russia's Pella Shipyard on behalf of end user Rosmorport, the state maritime agency.

It is designed for use in the Arctic at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.

The vessel can break ice of up to 2.5 metres in thickness and has a bollard pull of 120 tonnes, with a top speed of 12 knots.

The ship can also house 35 crew and 22 specialists.

Natallia Dean, director of Pella Sietas, said: "This contract is an important milestone in the company's history.

"We have been working on this contract for six years, which due to its complexity is carried out in close cooperation between the customer and the shipyard."
