French shipowner Bourbon is renewing part of its huge offshore fleet with a domestic order.

The company said it has contracted six Surfer-type crew transfer vessels (CTVs) at yard group Piriou for delivery in 2025.

Bourbon described the move as a “major investment” but did not reveal a price.

The group has a target of a 20% reduction in fuel consumption for the vessels.

The ships will operate in West Africa. They will be 27 metres long, with a maximum speed of 30 knots.

The Surfers can carry between 50 and 70 passengers, with two deck spaces for cargo: 40 square metres at the stern and 20 square metres at the front.

Bourbon said the CTVs will be capable of real-time data analysis for continuous fuel consumption optimisation.

They have been designed by Bourbon in collaboration with naval architecture firm Mauric.

“The navigation bridge has been completely redesigned with improved control stations allowing better visibility for the pilot and the very latest navigation equipment (radar, electronic chart),” the company said.

Bourbon Mobility chief executive Francois Lesle added: “This order of six Surfers illustrates our commitment to decarbonise our operations and provide innovative solutions to our customers.”

The group has a fleet of nearly 250 ships.

Operations are divided into four divisions: Bourbon Marine & Logistics, Bourbon Mobility, Bourbon Subsea Services and Bourbon Wind.

Revenue was €542m ($588m) in 2022.
