Carnival will one day have a small fleet of LNG-powered cruiseships bringing vacationers to exotic destinations far and wide.

The Miami-based cruise major has signed a shipbuilding contract for a second next-generation passengership for its UK-focused P&O Cruises brand.

The 5,200-berth vessel, to be built by Meyer Werft's shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, for 2022 delivery, will be powered with dual-fuel engines using LNG power in port and at sea.

It will follow a sister ship set for deliver in 2020 and will be the largest cruiseship built for the British market, Carnival said.

Carnival has agreements with German and Finnish shipbuilders Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku to build eight LNG-powered cruise ships across four of its 10 global cruise brands for delivery by 2022.

The other six ships include sets of two for delivery to Aida Cruises in 2018 and 2021, Costa Cruises in 2019 and 2021 and Carnival Cruise Line in 2020 and 2022.

The initiative is part of a broader goal to take on 19 new ships by 2022.
