Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine has secured a series of conversion and newbuilding projects worth a total of SGD 400m ($288m).

One of the key contracts is a project to convert the 298,000-dwt VLCC Ariake (built 2001) into an FPSO for deployment off India’s east coast.

The contract has been secured from a joint venture between Shapoorji Pallonji Oil and Gas and Malaysian FPSO specialist Bumi Armada Berhad.

The project includes hull repairs and upgrading as well as fabrication of at least three topside modules which Sembcorp Marine will install on the vessel.

The work will be done at its Tuas Boulevard Yard, with delivery scheduled in the second half of 2021. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Once converted, the vessel will produce up to 90,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and have a 1.3-million-barrel storage facility.

William Gu, Sembcorp Marine’s head of rigs & floaters, said the contract would “enhance the company’s visibility in the Indian offshore oil and gas sector”.

Sembcorp Marine has also added three new gas projects to its portfolio including the conversion of NYK Line’s 127,000-cbm LNG Flora (built 1993) into an FSU for Gasfin Development for deployment of Ghana in West Africa.

It will also carry out unspecified upgrading works on the 173,400cbm FSRU BW Magna (built 2019) for BW LNG.

Sembcorp Marine also confirmed that it was converting the 125,000-cbm LNG carrier Dwiputra (built 1994) into an FSRU for a joint venture between Mitsui OSK Lines and Karpower International.

All three projects will be completed at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard, for delivery between the end of this year and February 2020.

Sembcorp Marine has also secured what it described as a “breakthrough contract” in Taiwan’s offshore wind market.

It will fabricate 15 jacket foundations for the Formosa 2 Offshore Wind Farm under a contract from Dutch contractor Jan De Nul.

Located 4km offshore Miaoli County in the Taiwan Strait, the 376MW Formosa 2 facility will be Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farm.

“The partnership with Jan De Nul on Formosa 2 represents our first exploit in the highly competitive Taiwanese offshore wind sector,” said Sembcorp Marine Head of Offshore Platforms Mr Samuel Wong.

“This is an important opportunity to extend our engineering solutions into the Asian offshore renewable energy markets.”

Sembcorp Marine said it will deliver the Formosa 2 jacket foundations to Jan De Nul by December 2020 .

Finally, Sembcorp Marine said it will also spearhead the makeover of Japan’s largest cruiseship, NYK Cruises; 50,142-gt Asuka II (built 1990).

The project includes installing a scrubber unit and is to be carried out over 45 days at its Admiralty Yard from January 2020.

Commenting on Sembcorp Marine’s latest project wins, chief executive Wong Weng Sun said: “Despite the challenging market conditions, we have been steadfastly pursuing the available pockets of opportunities.

“I am very pleased that our teams have translated several of these opportunities into new contracts.”
