Heavylift specialist Jumbo has launched a project to supply biofuel to the offshore support sector.

The Dutch operator will begin testing biofuels on an offshore decommissioning project in a joint-venture with marine biofuel company GoodFuels.

The effort involves the delivery of sustainable biofuel to Jumbo’s offshore heavy vessel, the 13,300-dwt Fairplayer (built 2008), to carry out work in the North Sea later this year and in 2020.

The contract with TAQA Energy involves the removal, transportation and disposal of three subsea protection domes and piles.

Biofuel oil will be supplied by GoodFuels logistics partner Varo Energy.

GoodFuels has already carried out successful deliveries of biofuel in projects with Danish bulk carrier Norden and French container operator CMA CGM.

A cargo of sustainable biofuel was loaded onto the 5,095-teu CMA CGM White Shark (built 2007) in March, and Norden used the fuel last year on a voyage using the 37,000-dwt product tanker Nord Highlander (built 2007).

GoodFuel derives biofuel from forest residues and waste oil products.

The fuel is expected to deliver 80% to 90% CO2 reduction versus fossil fuel equivalents, and virtually eliminate sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions.
