PSA Corp and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) have joined forces in an effort to provide the best and brightest engineers to the maritime industry.

The two entities have together launched a chartered engineer certification programme for the port and marine sector.

The course, launched by IES in 2013 for other fields, externally validates a maritime engineer’s experience and technical expertise through a rigorous assessment process.

It also gauges their commitment to developing the skills of others in maritime engineering, Singapore-based PSA said.

"This programme will give engineers from PSA and the industry an opportunity to receive internationally recognised validation of their experience, and a respected mark of professional competency," said Ong Kim Pong, CEO of PSA International's Southeast Asia region.

IES deputy president Dr Yeoh Lean Weng and he gave the first 13 certificates to engineers from PSA, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Jurong Port, Portek International and National University of Singapore.

PSA said it will also work with IES to identify relevant skills development programmes for engineers to enhance their skills and meet the needs of intelligent ports of the future.
