Influential Greek shipowner John Angelicoussis remains unconscious in an Athens hospital after a serious health incident on 20 March.

The head of the Angelicoussis Shipping Group (ASG) is still in critical but stable condition, a spokesman for his family told TradeWinds.

“Nothing has changed” from the company’s initial statement on the matter a day after the incident, the spokesman said.

A spokesman for his family told TradeWinds Angelicoussis remains in hospital in Athens, "where his condition is critical and of great concern to his family and staff around the world.

"He is receiving the very best of medical attention," he said.

Initial information when Angelicoussis was taken ill suggested that the owner of one of the world’s biggest private fleets suffered a heart attack.

According to later information, he collapsed due to a “massive” stroke at home, which left his brain starved of oxygen for quite some time.

He is being treated by Greek doctors at the Henry Dunant hospital in Athens, as well as from overseas specialists who have come in to examine him.

ASG staff and sources in contact with those close to Angelicoussis remain deeply concerned at the owner’s prospects of recovery.

The owner is said to be still in an induced coma.

One source described the dramatic and sudden decline in his health as “utterly tragic”, while another said current position was “not a happy situation”.

“Miracles can happen,” a third added hopefully.

The Angelicoussis family spokesman said: "While understanding the interest in John Angelicoussis’ condition, his family request that his privacy be respected at this worrying time when any speculation is hurtful to those close to him."

An update as to his condition will be provided "when appropriate", he added.

Angelicoussis, 72, is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential Greeks of his generation, earning a reputation for closely watched market moves.

Observers said that even though he has not always been physically present at business events – preferring a more low profile position – he remains “extremely important” for the Greek shipping industry.

With more than 130 ASG ships flying the Greek flag, the group alone accounts for nearly a third of the entire oceangoing fleet registered in its home country. ASG employs about 300 shoreside personnel as well as over 3,700 officers and crew.

Maria Angelicoussis, John's only child, has taken up the role of acting chief executive in her father's absence. She had been groomed for the role for years and already assumed a prominent role in steering ASG, especially after a recent management reshuffle that saw the departure of previous senior executives.
