US Shipping has promoted Al Bergeron to replace chief executive Michael Ryan.

The New Jersey shipowner said the long-time chief financial officer is being promoted as Ryan steps down to take a position at another company after five years at US Shipping.

Bergeron will also take a seat on the company's board of directors.

"We will continue to focus on the transportation basics of uncompromising safety and compliance, executing the most cost efficient ways to manage our valuable service product and developing long-term relationships with clients who view US Shipping Corp as a solution for their supply chain requirements," the new chief executive said in an announcement.

The company, which owns a fleet of Jones act tankers and articulated tug barges, said it expects to hire one of several candidates it has identified to take over Bergeron's current job, but he will continue to carry out chief financial officer duties in the interim.

20 years in shipping

Bergeron has been  chief financial officer at US Shipping since its start in September 2002. The certified public accountant has a total of 20 years of experience in shipping.

"Our success will continue to bolster the financial strength of the company and generate the customer relationships we need to reinvest and grow our business for the long term," said Bergeron, who could not be immediately reached for further comment.
