The Mission to Seafarers kicked off its second Adventure Race Japan, taking place in May 2025.

At an official launch party held during Singapore Maritime Week, Jan Webber, director of development for The Mission, said race organisers were hoping to surpass the success of the inaugural race of 2023. With 192 participants from 19 countries, the event raised $1.3m.

“I was just an incredible result,” said Webber.

“Funds have gone to continue our good work with seafarers and their families in the Philippines, and toward the key hub expansion plans here in Singapore, where we know we are not yet reaching everyone who needs us. Soon Kok and his team undertake an incredible 4,000 ship visits, but 140,000 ships are visiting here annually.”

Adventure Race Japan 2025 follows the same format as the inaugural 2023 race. Teams of three, depending on fitness levels, will run or hike the gruelling terrain of the Izu Peninsula over two days.

Webber described the event as two days of trekking with three nights of enjoyable evening functions.

The 2023 race featured 60 individuals from Japan and 57 from Singapore. Thirty-seven women took part.

Webber said The Mission hopes that seafarers will also participate in the 2025 race.

Adventure Race Japan is already attracting significant sponsorship, with Swire Shipping and Swire Bulk, Arrow, APMT and NorthStandard signing on as gold sponsors.

“Our big news is that MOL has upgraded from gold in 2023 to take our top spot as a platinum sponsor,” Webber said.

Adventure Race Japan 2025 takes place from 15 to 18 May. The Mission welcomes all individuals — regardless of athletic ability — to participate.
