Kitack Lim will serve as secretary-general of the IMO for another four years, after being re-elected for a second term on Wednesday.

Lim was re-appointed by the 31st Assembly of the IMO, which began meetings at the organisation's London headquarters on 25 November, which concluded on Wednesday.

The Assembly last week elected a new 40-member council that will sit for the 2020-2021 biennium.

The new-look council will meet on Thursday for its 123rd session and will elect its chair and vice-chair for the two-year period ahead.

As TradeWinds has reported, Liberia, the world’s second-largest ship register, was not re-elected to the IMO Council last week and was replaced by Kuwait, which joins the group for the first time.

Sweden lost its place as a category B member and has been replaced by Argentina, which has returned to the council after a two-year absence.

Japan won the most votes to top the powerful category A countries.
