After nearly two days and thousands of miles, the US Coast Guard called off its search for an overboard Carnival Corp crewmember.

The agency said Sunday afternoon that it was unable to locate the worker, who fell off the 2,758-berth Carnival Victory (built 2000) 30 miles northwest of Cuba Thursday.

The Coast Guard said the search covered 2,600 square nautical miles over 45 hours and involved two cutters, a plane and help from the Cuban border patrol.

“We’ve been in contact with the crewmember’s family throughout our search efforts and know this is a very difficult time for them,” said Michael Mullen, search and rescue mission coordinator at the Coast Guard's 7th District.

“Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly.”

The Victory regularly sails from Miami to locations in the Caribbean.

Next March, the ship is due for a $200m renovation, after which it will be renamed the Radiance.
