Authorities in Fiji have barred the fleet of Goundar Shipping from operating in a row over safety rules.

Fiji Village reported that the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) said the vessels would be detained for failing to comply with the Maritime (Safe Ships Management) Regulation 2014.

Patterson Brothers and Interlink Shipping will be filling the void left by Goundar.

The Fiji Sun cited Goundar owner George Goundar as saying: "We have way better documents that what MSAF want. We have given the documents to MSAF surveyors and it's a shame we have to go this way."

He told FBC that the only vessels left to comply are the four new ships the company has acquired, but these have not begun operation yet.

Clarksons lists the company as having five operational ferries.
