A bulker that suffered serious water ingress has been safely towed to Tallinn in Estonia.

The 40,000-dwt Glory Hongkong (built 2012) was down by the stern on 8 March after the water level reached between six and seven metres in the engine room.

"The damage is deep enough in the ship to prevent it taking on more water. The leaking section of the vessel has now been sealed off, so the water will not enter other areas. In this sense, the situation has stabilised," Janne Roynankoski, an officer with Helsinki's Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRCS), told YLE.

The crew of 22 were unharmed.

"The crew has been on the ship the whole time and remains operational. There was no immediate danger that would have required evacuation, although our fleet was prepared for this scenario as well," Ryonankoski added.

The Seacon ship was en route to St Petersburg in Russia went it sent a distress call in the Gulf of Finland.

The reason for the leak was still unclear.

The ship will now be repaired. No pollution has been reported.
