A near miss for a Costa Cruises vessel in Venice has brought renewed calls for a ban on big cruiseships in the Italian city.

Video footage shows the 93,300-gt Costa Deliziosa (Built 2010) making a last-ditch turn in a storm to avoid crashing into a waterside restaurant on Sunday.

Costa cited the “violent, extraordinary and sudden meteorological event” as the cause, Euronews reported.

And it maintained that “the captain has always maintained control of the ship.”

In June, the 2,675-berth MSC Opera (built 2004) slammed into a dock and river tourist boat along the busy waterway leading to St Mark's Square, injuring four elderly women, Associated Press reports.

After the latest incident, residents took to social media to voice concerns under the hashtag #NoGrandiNavi.

Italian authorities have called for an immediate ban on the ships.
