Arctic Shipping has recruited seasoned sale-and-purchase (S&P) broker Jan Egil Roald at the same time as co-owner Arctic Securities has hired veteran tanker analyst Ole-Rikard Hammer, both from Clarksons Platou.

Roald and Hammer clocked on at Arctic’s Haakon VIIs gate 5 head office in Oslo for the first time this week.

Roald becomes the first new recruit for Arctic Shipping, which was established last summer with a team of seven.

Managing director Odd Jacob Fritzner confirmed the move when contacted by TradeWinds.

“He will be a strong addition to our team and fits with our stated strategy of growth for the company with the right people,” Fritzner said.

“The opportunity came up when Jan Egil decided to leave Clarkson Platou and we are pleased he found Arctic Shipping to be his next step in his long and successful career in shipbroking.”

Roald began his career in the S&P department of RS Platou in 1990 and progressed to be a partner and later senior partner at the private Norwegian brokerage, which merged with Clarksons in 2015. He became a director at the combined Clarksons Platou before leaving earlier this year.

Arctic Shipping is a joint-venture between John Fredriksen and Norwegian investment bank Arctic Securities. Its initial team was drawn from Pareto Shipbrokers, Clarksons Platou and Joachim Grieg & Co.

Hammer, a well-known face in shipping research circles, joined Arctic Securities this week as a senior oil and tanker market analyst.

He spent six years at Platou and later Clarksons Platou, having been hired originally to replace Erik M Andersen as managing director of RS Platou Research.

“He will work closely with Arctic subsidiaries — including us — serving the oil and tanker markets,” Fritzner said. “This will further enhance the Arctic group’s ability to serve our clients with a broader and better coverage of the oil and shipping markets.”
