A DR Congo-flagged cargoship held in a drugs bust off Spain last year is to be auctioned.

The Malaga Hoy daily said the 2,500–dwt Just Reema (built 1978) will be sold at an initial EUR 401,000 ($457,000), at the request of the port authority.

The ship, listed by the Equasis database as owned by Falcomar Shipping of the Marshall Islands, was seized off Malaga in June 2015.

Nine crew - three Indians and six Syrians – were jailed for six years after 14,800kg of hashish worth EUR 23.7m was found in a double-bottomed hull.

French police had tipped off Europol ahead of the raid.

Investigators initially found a 1,500-ton cargo of salt, but moved the ship into port for further checks.

The vessel was heading from the eastern Mediterranean.

Offers may be submitted for the ship until 5 September.
