Clarksons has beefed up its board's bulker expertise and diversity by appointing mining expert Heike Truol.

She joins the London-listed broker with immediate effect as a non-executive director, and will serve as a member of the audit and risk, nomination and remuneration committees.

Truol has 11 years of experience at miner Anglo American, where she is executive head of commercial services, and will bring more perspective to its dry cargo operations in particular.

She is leaving the mining group at the end of April.

Truol becomes the second woman on the eight-strong board at Clarksons.

Shipping expertise

On joining Anglo American in 2009 as group head of strategy, Truol helped evolve the strategy function, working closely with the CEO and executive committee, Clarksons said.

In her current role, she helped establish the marketing business and has had profit and loss responsibility for Anglo American’s global shipping activities.

She was previously a management consultant and held positions at Marakon Associates and Deloitte.

Clarksons chairman Sir Bill Thomas said said Heike brings deep knowledge of dry bulk to the board and a customer's perspective.

"Heike’s previous experience and skills will complement that of the rest of the board - she is an experienced adviser and her background in strategic planning will be invaluable," he said.

"With its reputation as a market leader in the shipping industry and its continued growth, Clarksons has built an impressive track record. I very much look forward to working with the board."
