London-listed shipbroker Clarksons has announced a change of leadership at its Athens base.

Clarksons Hellas managing director Savvas Athanassiades is leaving by mutual consent after 20 years of service, the brokerage said.

Athanassiades wants to pursue new opportunities, Clarksons added.

“Clarksons would like to extend its thanks and recognition to Savvas for his hard work and commitment and wish him all the best for the future,” the London shop added.

The company is promoting its global head of tankers, Neo Tsangarides, to the Clarksons Hellas managing director role.

The Athens-based broker will continue to head the tanker operations.

Clarksons Hellas provides dry cargo, deepsea tankers and sale-and-purchase broking services to clients in the region.

“Greece remains a key strategic location for Clarksons due to its long-term relationship with shipowners and connections with shipyards,” the company said.

The Clarksons website lists 28 brokers in Athens.

Last month, Clarksons chief executive Andi Case told TradeWinds that, fresh from posting a third consecutive year of record earnings in 2023, the London-listed shipbroker is in a “fabulous position” in the market.

Breaking records

Case said: “We’re forward-leaning people, so once you set records, you aim to break them. Why wouldn’t you?

“That’s how we’re set up. We’ve been investing across the group,” he added.

Case explained the business is reviewed strategically every quarter.

“We highlight key hires that we’re trying to make,” he told TradeWinds.

Case said the group is not specifically trying to grow overseas at the expense of the UK, even though most of its expansion over the past 10 years has been in foreign territories.

“London was responsible for a large percentage of the growth 10 years ago and it’s still the powerhouse,” Case added.
