The Singapore branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) aims to smooth the path for people with disabilities looking to enter the shipping industry.

The government-backed initiative aims to provide individuals with a basic understanding if shipping covering the ship types, main cargo segments and trade routes.

It also aims to give participants an understanding of the trading process and the documents involved.

The initiative by the ICS has the backing of SG Enable – a government body dedicated to enabling persons with disabilities.

Once participants have completed the course, the ICS said it will “coordinate and assist” in finding job placements in the maritime industry.

“The results of a poll carried out a few months ago indicated a positive response from the SSA member companies and we are confident that the support will grow,” the ICS said.

Captain Subhangshu Dutt, chairman of the ICS branch commented: “ Getting this initiative going in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis is an achievement.

“An even greater sense of satisfaction would be to see the candidates with disabilities getting placements and eventually anchored in a career in shipping.”

The first course is expected to commence by the end of June and higher-level courses would be available progressively, the ICS said.

The initial course will comprise four half-days and be open to people who are physically or hearing impaired who must either be a Singaporean or and Singapore permanent resident.

Figures for FY2018 – t he most recently available – s how that SG Enable succeeded in placing over 680 persons with disabilities in employment.

“Persons with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to an organisation’s performance when employers focus on their abilities, provide the right job match, and introduce job redesign where needed,” SG Enable said in its latest annual report.

“Inclusion in the workplace can help to build a culture that welcomes different perspectives and is caring for both staff and customers.”
