Well-known shipping banker Ali Susanto has joined shipbroking group SSY as co-head of its ship finance division.

Singapore resident Susanto joins from rival Braemar, where he was managing director of its corporate finance team.

He will work alongside Jarl Magnus Berge, who joined SSY in August last year.

Susanto has been in banking for 25 years and has expertise in structuring ship leases, equity and debt.

Before Braemar, he was executive director of shipping finance at Standard Chartered and head of energy transport and infrastructure at GGL Asset Management. Before that, he worked for DVB Bank.

Stanko Jekov, SSY’s managing partner, said: “Ali comes to SSY with a proven track record and considerable experience in ship finance.

“I'm sure that his expert skill set will be a welcome addition to our already experienced team and am confident that together with Jarl Magnus, he will continue to drive this business forward as we expand our footprint in this fast-paced and dynamic sector of shipping.”

Susanto said it was a “true honour” to join the world’s largest independently owned shipbroking group and was looking forward to working with Berge.

“We are unified in our vision to become the ‘go-to’ finance advisory service in the shipping industry and we will work tirelessly to make that vision a reality,” he said.

SSY has dedicated finance desks in Singapore, London, Oslo and New York that provide advisory services and arrange, structure and execute shipping investments, mergers and acquisitions, divestments and restructurings.

The group’s headcount has grown by about 150 over the past two years and now numbers around 500 people across the world.

Braemar Corporate Finance is headed up from London by Peyton Broer.
