Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is set to conclude an order for two ro-ro ferry newbuildings from local Japanese ferry consortium SHK Line Group.

The ships will go into service on a new route planned by the group from 2021. The new route will run between Yokosuka in Kanagawa prefecture to the Japanese island of Kyushu.

The vessels will be 16,000 gt with capacity to carry 170 trucks and vehicles.

No price has been given for the newbuilding deal.

Mitsubishi usually builds ferries at its small Simonoseki shipyard. However, at over 200 metres in length, the SHK Line order is understood to be too large to be built at the yard and instead will be built at Mitsubishi’s main Nagasaki plant.

SHK Line is a formed out of eight Japanese ferry companies including Kanko Kisen, Shin Nihon Kai Ferry and Venus Cruise Lines.
