Anyone trying to get in shape for the new year might do well to take a leaf out of DSME’s book.

The South Korean shipyard, which came under financial pressure last year but is intent on improving its fortunes in 2018, makes sure its employees and visitors are aware of the marginal gains that can be achieved by taking the stairs.

Stickers on the stairs in the company’s Okpo yard HQ block state that walkers consume 0.15 calories for each step climbed, adding a possible four seconds to their life.

“Get healthier” and “Reduce body fat”, the stickers scream. With a nod to the company’s budget, others read: “Let’s save electricity and burn calories.”

Inspired? When it comes to lunchtime, walk past the lift and check out those stairs.
