Fincantieri-controlled Vard has finalized a NOK 5bn ($616m) contract with Norway for three coastguard vessels.

Vard won the tender for the vessels last year and the Norwegian Parliament signed off on the ships earlier this month, allowing negotiations to be concluded.

The 136-meter-long ships, for search-and-rescue operations, surveillance, and oil recovery, have been designed to work in harsh environments, including the arctic.

Delivery of the first unit is inked in for the first quarter of 2022, with the other two following at 12-month intervals.

Hulls will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania, with Vard Langsten delivering the outfitting.

Roy Reite, chief executive of Vard, said in a statement: “Our longstanding experience in the design and shipbuilding of highly specialized vessels has been of vital importance in the competition and development of this project.

“Our strength lies in recognizing and understanding the customer’s and the market’s needs, and introducing innovative solutions based on the vessel’s objective, services, operative window and geographical scope.”
