Horizon Tankers has returned to Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard for more MR newbuildings.

The Greek company has ordered two 50,000-dwt product carriers at the Chinese yard, lifting its newbuilding tally there to six.

Shipbuilding players said the latest pair was ordered through options that Horizon Tankers held when it contracted its earlier four newbuildings in May.

A source at the shipyard confirmed the order.

The price for the latest duo has yet to emerge, but the earlier four ships were reported to cost slightly more than $45m each.

The product carriers — which will each have 12 cargo tanks plus two slop tanks — were designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute.

Zhoushan Changhong is scheduled to deliver the six vessels between 2026 and 2027.

Horizon Tankers was established in 2007 and is the sister company to Target Marine, which was founded in 1986 by Anthony Comninos, a low-profile shipowner.

Its fleet consists of four suezmax tankers and eight MRs.

Zhoushan Changhong is a newcomer in the MR tanker segment. The privately owned yard, which is better known as a container ship specialist, debuted in the tanker sector in 2022 when it received a two-ship order from Pro Tanker Investment.

Pro Tanker was launched by the New Changjiang Group, which also owns Zhoushan Changhong.

This month, Zhoushan Changhong delivered its first MR — the 50,000-dwt Golden Sun (built 2024) to Pro Tanker.

It is the first of six MRs that Pro Tanker ordered there.
