A vessel performance company involving BW Group, wave technology firm Miros Group and Copenhagen Commercial Platform has launched a platform to validate shipping energy saving devices based on standard methodology designed by class society DNV.

Joint venture Miros Mocean said its TrueView Platform will deliver unprecedented accuracy in ship performance measurements, enabling the verification of energy saving benefits and performance-linked charter party contracts.

Real savings have not previously been measured and verified in service, Miros Mocean said, but a standard methodology for measuring and evaluating vessel performance during operation has recently been devised by DNV, the Recommended Practice for Technical Ship Performance and the Vessel Technical Index.

“By providing accurate and verifiable data on the benefits of energy saving devices, we empower ship owners to make informed investment decisions that contribute to a greener future,” said Andreas Brekke, chief executive of Miros Mocean which was set up in 2021.

Miros Mocean said that as well as validating investments in energy saving systems by monitoring vessel speed through water with accurate and local weather data, True View addresses split incentives in commercial contracts (CP) between owners and charterers. Currently, vessels are operated based on warranties rather than optimal performance, leading to significant tolerances in warranties.

Measuring the vessel's continuous development in performance with the DNV-verified vessel index, the company said its Efficient Charter Party (eCP) system links actual performance to commercial contracts to create a mutually beneficial situation for all parties.

“With this true picture of how efficient and commercially viable a ship is, we can revolutionize the way the shipping industry optimizes charter party contracts, shares cost savings, and incentivizes decarbonisation,” added Brekke.
