China Cosco Shipping has completed China's first carbon-neutral shipment of crude on a tanker.

The company carried 30,000 tonnes of oil on an unnamed vessel from Angola to Ningbo Zhoushan port in China.

The crude was produced by China's Sinopec and travelled 9,300 nautical miles (17,200 km) across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, Cosco said.

The oil ended up at Sinopec's Gaoqiao Petrochemical Corporation refinery.

Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange issued a certificate to the shipowner, the charterer and China Eastern Airlines for the pioneering voyage.

The three companies are working together to develop "a new model of green transportation", Cosco added.

Carbon-neutral products to be launched

Sinopec will officially launch carbon-neutral petrol and diesel products to the public at designated stations this year.

The energy company will also be supplying 5,417 tonnes of jet fuel to China Eastern Airlines in an effort to develop carbon-neutral flights.

Carbon emissions were offset through the purchase of Chinese Certified Emission Reduction carbon credits.

China Classification Society Certification Company verified the carbon dioxide produced throughout the entire lifecycle, including extraction, transport, storage and refining.

"Sinopec is committed to achieve green and low-carbon development. This carbon neutral petroleum project has achieved carbon neutrality from the cradle to the grave with every drop of oil," said Ling Yiqun, Sinopec vice president.

"It is also the first carbon emissions offset endeavour carried out by companies across three industries, realising full coverage of carbon neutralisation of land, sea and air transportation," he added.
