India's navy is sending two warships to the Gulf of Oman to protect its shipping following tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

CNN cited a navy statement as saying guided-missile destroyer INS Chennai and patrol vessel INS Sunayna "have been deployed in the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf to undertake maritime security operations."

Surveillance aircraft are also being sent to the region as part of Operation Sankalp.

Earlier this month, Frontline and BSM vessels were targeted off the coast of Iran, a country the US has blamed for the incidents. Iran has denied this.

India is not saying when their vessels will arrive or exactly where they would be deployed.

"Indian navy remains committed to ensuring safety of Indian maritime trade and merchant vessels operating in the region and contributing towards maintaining a stable and peaceful Indian Ocean region," the navy said.
