Lloyd's Register (LR) has approved a new Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) design for an LNG-fuelled MR tanker - as the yard eyes a move into other sectors.

The 50,000-dwt ship is part of the yard's efforts to focus on gas-powered eco-vessels.

Mipo has incorporated an LNG-fuelled propulsion system into its most successful tanker design, following technical cooperation with LR.

The yard is now reviewing various other types of LNG-fuelled vessels, such as bulk carriers and containerships.

Its executive VP Jeon Seung-Ho said: “We have focused on developing both a technically reliable and commercially feasible solution for an LNG dual-fuelled propulsion system. We are glad to be one step closer to making this solution a reality.”
