Danish bunker and tanker group Monjasa has carried out the first very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) bunkering operation in Colombia.

It said 250 tonnes of fuel was supplied to the 9,108-cbm Geogas LPG carrier Penelope M (built 2015) at Cartagena anchorage on 1 October.

It was supervised by additional Monjasa representatives and the product was supplied in compliance with ISO 8217 fuel standards.

Monjasa also plans to have marine gasoil available in Colombia. It has two tankers there, as well as shore tanks.

Its managing director for the Americas, Rasmus Jacobsen, said: “We are pleased to see this first VLSFO supply in Colombia taking place well ahead of 1 January 2020.

"Both suppliers and shipowners need this on-board operational experience and product knowledge to ensure the best possible industry transition."

He added: "Now, our eyes are set on introducing low-sulphur fuel in key markets in Panama and in the US as well.”

In the Panama Canal, Monjasa has confirmed future local storage of VLSFO and current bunker operations with three vessels. Another ship is deployed in Cristobal.

In August, the company completed its first ship-to-ship transfer of low-sulphur fuel ahead of the IMO 2020 deadline.

Its 2,700-dwt tanker Vinga Safir (built 2000) went alongside Foreland Shipping's 23,200-gt freight ro-ro Hurst Point (built 2002) in Southampton and pumped very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and 0.1% marine gasoil aboard.
