South Korea's SK Trading International is to quadruple its production of low sulpur fuel oil (LSFO) to meet growing demand in 2020.

The unit of SK Innovation said it will increase blending capacity from 23,000 barrels per day to 90,000 barrels next year.

The Korea Herald reported that the company is aiming to become the biggest provider of LSFO in Asia.

The move is being supported by sister refiner SK Energy’s vacuum residue desulphurisation facility, which starts full operations in April.

It can produce 130,000 barrels per day of LSFO.

SK said its target of providing 50m barrels per year will cut emissions by 100,000 tons - equivalent to the sulphur oxide pumped out by 200 VLCCs over a year.
