A recent man-overboard drill by the crew of a Teekay offshore vessel quickly turned into a wildlife rescue mission.

During the exercise onboard the floating storage and offloading vessel Randgrid, one of the crew discovered a gannet caught in a fishing net.

“Thanks to the crew members’ quick actions, they were able to reach the gannet in time, liberate it from the net and release it back into the wild,” Teekay said.

“Fortunately, this story has a happy ending — but serves as a great reminder of the importance of keeping our waters clean and discarding of garbage responsibly.”

About one million seabirds and around 100,000 sea turtles and marine mammals die each year after eating ocean plastic.

The FSO Randgrid is on charter to Equinor on the Gina Krog oil and gas field in the North Sea, under a firm charter period of three years, plus extension options. The unit was converted from one of Teekay’s existing shuttle tankers at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard in Singapore.
