Teekay Offshore has confirmed the addition of two extra shuttle tanker newbuildings at Samsung Heavy Industries.

Seoul-listed Samsung announced a $240m contract for two ships back in late June and TradeWinds has previously reported Teekay to be behind the DP2 tankers.

In its second quarter report today, Teekay Offshore revealed the aframaxes would use LNG propulsion.

The Canadian group has joined Russian giant Sovcomflot and AET in opting for LNG fueling on aframax sizes tankers.

Teekay Offshore is expecting to take delivery of the pair in late 2020 and early 2021.

They will be employed in the North Sea, where the company has a number of shuttle tankers trading on contracts of affreightment.

Ingvild Saether, chief executive of Teekay Offshore, said the deal with Samsung was an “important milestone” for its shuttle tanker business.

“Our customers require a reliable, long-term solution for securing offtake services from a large proportion of current and future production in the North Sea and these state-of-the-art newbuildings, together with our four existing newbuildings under construction, demonstrate our ongoing commitment to our shuttle tanker franchise and our customers,” she said.
