Denmark’s Torm is reported to have returned to US owner Alterna Capital for more secondhand MR tankers.

European brokers said a deal had been done for four eco vessels at $150m en bloc, or $37.5m each.

The vessels listed are the 50,000-dwt Essie C, Jane S, Nancy P (all built 2015) and Marie S (built 2016).

Special surveys are not due on the tankers until 2025 and 2026

VesselsValue assesses the quartet as worth just shy of $155m.

Values a year ago were about $159m combined.

Greece’s Xclusiv Shipbrokers rates a five-year-old MR vessel worth $42.3m, up 7% annually.

Alterna is listed with 10 tankers valued at $305m, including the four MRs and six smaller 25,200-dwt ships built in 2015 and 2016.

Both companies have been contacted for comment.

This would be Torm’s second raid on the Alterna fleet in six months.

In March, Torm, controlled by Oaktree Capital Management, said it had spent $97m on a trio of 2013-built MR vessels but did not name the seller.

It later emerged that Alterna had offloaded the vessels.

Extra capacity immediately

The vessels were the 50,000-dwt Gladys W, Julia L and Marjorie K.

Torm chief executive Jacob Meldgaard told TradeWinds he was pleased with the price, as it meant the company had extra capacity straight away.

The price was $32.3m per ship, up from $24m in a year, according to VesselsValue.

Alterna paid $33.6m each to order them in 2012.

The US seller received half the fee in cash and half as Torm stock.

The fund had not sold ships since exiting the bulker sector in 2021 with the disposal of three supramaxes to Eagle Bulk Shipping.
