Danish vessel optimisation platform ZeroNorth has claimed a big jump in the amount of CO2 it has helped cut from ships.

The Copenhagen-based organisation, backed by AP Moller Holding, Cargill and PSG Equity, said its service has prevented 443,780 tonnes of the greenhouse gases being released into the air, up 104% from 2021.

ZeroNorth calculated its 2022 figure by using customer noon reports.

The platform works by optimising organisations’ daily operational needs, unlocking efficiencies.

The company is also offering emissions verification reporting and is helping boost owners’ Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings.

In a sample taken of its customers’ ships, 60% were able to maintain the same CII rating for the full year and 40% saw an improvement, through monitoring and taking emissions-reducing action.

Lora Jakobsen, ZeroNorth’s chief purpose activist, said the CO2 figure was calculated through a rigorous procedure and is a “testament to the capability of the ZeroNorth platform to deliver immediate emissions reductions, and comes as a demonstration of our dedication to drive the green transition and support our partners and the industry to move in the right direction”.

The company is using class society DNV’s Veracity cloud platform to make reporting easier.

ZeroNorth was founded in 2020 and has expanded by adding five new services last year.

Already in 2023 it has agreed to buy bunker software company BTS in Singapore.

The transaction will add BTS’ flagship suite of services to the group.

These comprise the Intelligent Bunker Management System (iBMS), software tailored for the marine fuel supply chain.
