Carbon War Room (CWR) has upgraded its analysis of individual ship efficiency through a new project called BetterFleet.

Its latest initiative on assessing just how efficient ships are was launched at the World Ocean Summit in Rotterdam today.

The free to use service is intended to improve transparency with the intention of encouraging owners and charterers to improve operational efficiency and reduce green house gas emissions.

While the previous service relied on records of installed power and cargo carried, Better Fleet trawls its data from a wider field including the Automatic Identification System.

The service has been developed with major shipowners including Rickmers Shipmanagement.

CWR’s ship operation manager Galon Hon was instrumental in developing the scheme. He said: “BetterFleet delivers greater understanding to shippers and charterers of the impact of their supply-chain demands on ship efficiency.”

“BetterFleet illustrates where and how much efficiency varies for ships, in order to identify potential sources of inefficiencies, find opportunities to optimise operations, and reduce costs for everyone. It will also empower owners to begin conversations with their charterers and shippers about how operations affect the bottom line, carbon emissions, and the environment.”
